Cultural Fit
What’s a good cultural fit for me?
I’ve been lucky. My career has taken me places, organizationally and culture-wise.
I’ve worked for global corporations, like Accenture; large national companies, like Anthem; renowned nonprofits, like the American Medical Association and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners; and agile mid- and small-size companies, like RevenueWell and AIM Specialty Health.
These experiences have been educational. They’ve helped me learn which cultures I excel in, which values to look for in a company, and which type of teams I thrive in — and, I hope, help thrive, too.
Below are some lessons I’ve learned along the way, which may help you understand whether I would be a good fit for your organization, your team, or your project.
I’m a good fit for your culture if you…
can recite the organization’s and team’s goals by heart
Hire talented people with diverse backgrounds instead of creating more rules and processes
Focus more on outcomes than volume and process adherence
Prioritize functional autonomy instead of top-down direction
Use data to make most decisions (and have data to make most decisions)
Know your customers (and your users), act on it, and design for it
Double-DOwn on professional development for employees
Hope employees’ very next role is better than their current one
publicize business data, strategy, and OKRs, or goals, so they are always accessible
Encourage experimentation and (calculated) risk on a daily basis
Appreciate the difference between collaboration and duplication
View managers as objective setters, talent cultivators, team ambassadors, and facilitators
Sound like a fit?
